The God at Work Course

What is the course?

Based on Ken Costa's book God at Work, the God at Work course aims to equip Christians to find purpose in the workplace. It is comprised of six one-hour sessions, and is designed to be run on a weekly basis.

The course provides a Christian perspective on challenges common to those who work, including:

  • Work matters
  • Ambition
  • Tough decisions and choices
  • Stress and work-life balance
  • Failure, disappointment and hope
  • Money and mission

The theme of spiritual renewal is also covered throughout the course.

Each session is interactive, consisting of teaching, individual and group exercises, and group discussion when appropriate.

The God at Work course is designed for small or mid-sized groups and can be run in both churches and workplace fellowships. If your workplace fellowship is already running Alpha in the Workplace, we recommend the God at Work course as an ideal follow-up.

Courses vary in size and venue. Some may choose to lead a course in a meeting room or canteen, whereas others prefer to meet after work in a neutral location outside of the office, such as a bar or hall. The course material can also be used as a study tool for church home-groups.

The materials for the God at Work course can be purchased on the Alpha Shop. Some course leaders may choose to purchase the material for the group and then be reimbursed on the first session. We recommend that each guest has both a Guest Manual and a God at Work book to read during the duration of the course.

Who is it for?

The God at Work course is designed for Christians of all denominations, whatever stage they are at in their walk with God. Whether post-Alpha or a long-standing Christian, this course has something to offer everyone.

The course is aimed at:

  • Those in paid employment
  • Those working in the voluntary sector
  • Those who work but are not paid (eg, stay-at-home parents)
  • Those who are between jobs
  • Those currently not working, but who hope to work in the future (eg, students)

Guests attend the God at Work course for a variety of different reasons. For some it has been recommended by a friend, whereas others are particularly interested in one of the discussion topics, such as work-life balance or how to make tough decisions. The course is a great way to meet other Christians and build support and prayer networks within companies.
