About Alpha for Forces

What is Alpha for Forces?Alpha for Forces helicopter

Alpha for Forces is the Alpha course adapted for use in the armed forces. Servicemen and women of all ranks are very welcome to attend.

What people in the Armed Forces are saying about Alpha

"If you want a no-holds-barred, open and honest discussion, you can bring all the questions and things that annoy you about anything to do with Christianity or religion to Alpha. You ask it, listen to what has got to be said and then make a decision. If you never ask the questions you'll never get any answers, and if you never give it a go you'll never know whether it was right or wrong, good or bad."

Scott Armstrong Helicopter Pilot Royal Navy

"In the Armed Forces we challenge ourselves physically, and we challenge ourselves mentally, but one area we often fail to challenge ourselves is where we are spiritually."

Warrant Officer 22 SAS

How is Alpha for Forces different?

  • Time constraints: the weekly meeting is shorter than the Alpha course, usually occupying a one-hour session
  • Condensed talks: talks run for a maximum of twenty to twenty-five minutes, either using live speakers, downloadable talks or DVDs
  • Resources: if sufficient funding exists, some courses provide the book Questions of Life for each guest
  • Worship: worship is usually not introduced until the Alpha weekend or day away
  • Social interaction: there is less time to get to know the guests, so the team may need to make a special effort to build relationships, eg, arranging drinks after work or catching up over coffee
