Run a Course

Alpha for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) is the Alpha Course run in simplified English. It is contextualised for those who don’t have a strong command of the English language. 

A typical guest may be a recent immigrant, an English language learner or an international student. This resource can be used for people with varying levels of English command.

How is it different to the Alpha Course?

  • It is run in simplified English
  • Each session starts with a warm up activity that helps the guest to engage with the specific topic of the session
  • The talks are dissected into 10 to 15 minute segments and each segment is followed by a short time of discussion
  • The content is more culturally neutral
  • Main points are followed by a choice of different illustrative activities. These include stories, pictorial references, animations, film clips and games. This helps to move away from the heavy reliance on words
