What is Alpha for ESOL?

Alpha for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) is adapted from the Alpha Course to meet the language comprehension needs of guests who do not speak a high level of English. Alpha for ESOL is not:

  • For people who do not speak any English
  • For people who want English language instruction/lessons

The vision of Alpha for ESOL

Reaching out to migrant communities may seem daunting. However, you don’t have to be an expert or speak their language, nor do they have to be fluent in English for you to communicate the good news about Jesus to them.

Communication theory

A message is communicated by the the following components:

  • Words (the literal meaning): 7%
  • Tone of voice: 38%
  • Body language: 55%

As indicated by the above percentages, words only make up a small part of our overall communication. This is great news, because there is such a need. You can do it!
