Nicky Gumbel goes to Ireland
Nicky and Pippa Gumbel met the new Papal ambassador to Ireland while in Dublin to attend the ‘RELaY (Reconciliation, Evangelisation, Leadership and Youth) European Leaders Conference’ last month.
Archbishop Charles Brown welcomed them to his home just hours after presenting his credentials to President Michael D Higgins formally to begin his new role.
Archbishop Brown spent 14 years working as an official at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, during ten years of which he worked at the side of the future Pope Benedict when as Cardinal Ratzinger he was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Nicky and Pippa Gumbel had previously met Archbishop Brown in Rome in 2004 where he had introduced them to Cardinal Ratzinger for a discussion about the growth of Alpha in the Catholic church.
The RELaY conference was attended by over 200 leaders of different denominations from all over Europe. Nicky spoke on the "10 Values of Leadership".
Nicky will be returning to Dublin in June for the International Eucharistic Congress. It will be the 50th anniversary of the Congress and over 25,000 Catholics from around the world are expected to attend. Nicky will be speaking on Thursday 14 June on "Communion in our Common Baptism" at 7.30pm – for full programme details visit here. In addition to Nicky’s talk, Alpha in a Catholic context will be hosting a programme as part of Congress activities happening in Dublin’s city centre, as well as leading two sessions in the ‘Chiaraluce’ Youth Space and holding a stand throughout the week.
