Hosts & Helpers

Around 40,000 people are involved in running the Alpha course in the UK. Being part of an Alpha group as a host or helper is hugely rewarding. It is also a commitment, so be sure to give everyone on the team a heads up of what's involved.

Hosts & helpers should be ready to:

  • Attend each session
  • Attend the three training sessions
  • Attend the weekend or day away
  • Create or be open to possible social occasions with the group
  • Join the group at the celebration party
  • Keep in contact with guests when the course is over
  • Pray for each group member regularly

Selecting your hosts & helpers

When selecting your team, ask the question, "Would I trust my best non-Christian friend with this person?" If the answer is "no" then they might not be the best choice for a group host or helper.

Start by looking for hosts and helpers in existing small groups you already have running in your church. They will provide a natural transition for guests who wish to continue in a small group after Alpha.

People who have just done the Alpha course make great helpers. They may want to do course again but instead of being a guest for a second time, ask if they to come back as a helper. They will be a key part of the group as they are excited about Alpha and also lack church jargon. Helpers play an important role in building friendships with the group and supporting the host.

No follow up

Team members will be aware through training that on Alpha, if a guest doesn't return, we do not call or email to check why. It is very normal for guests to drop off and as a non-pressured and relaxed course it is important there is no follow up in this case.
